Voortman Cookie, BAV Services to meet in Senior Softball final

After 10 weeks of competitive play, the Voortman Cookie Silver Surfers will face BAV Services at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the 50+ Senior Wood Bat Softball League Championship Game, which will be played at Cheektowaga Town Park’s diamond five.

Winning pitcher Mike Geiger limited Joint Venture to five singles while smacking three hits for four RBIs of his own to lead Voortman Cookie to a 14-1 semifinal round victory. Craig Meyers had a 3-for-3 day that included knocking in four runs, while Paul Young, Tim Berbach, Ben Wilson and Rich Serrano each added two hits to the Voortman attack.

Shortstop Mike Herb had six putouts in leading the winners on defense, while Lance Skowron made several solid running catches in left field on top of finishing 2-for-3 at the plate for Joint Venture.

BAV Services, meanwhile, pushed its winning streak to seven games heading into the final after squeaking out a 6-4 victory over True Buffalo Apparel in their semifinal.

The name of the game for both teams was great defense. True Buffalo Apparel jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning thanks to two RBIs from Rich Jablonski. BAV took back the lead with three runs in the second inning behind key hits by Art Pelletier and Art Meany.

TBA fought back to claim a 4-3 advantage in the top of the third on hits by Doug Pagano, Joe Wawrzynek, Shawn Yost and Mark Bellanca. John Meka ultimately scored two runs over the course of the game, while Bob Weigand guided the True Buffalo Apparel defense.

BAV Services tallied three runs in the bottom of the third, but that was all the scoring it could muster for the rest of the game.

Scott Kalman had three hits, John Loos was a standout at shortstop, and Dave Marcotte was strong on the mound for the winners.
