Festival of the Arts books two bands, still seeks artists, crafters

Continuing the planning process for the Orchard Park Festival of the Arts, the Orchard Park Chamber of Commerce has booked two bands, Carina & the Six String Preacher and Ron Hawkins from The Lowest of the Low for Saturday’s musical experience portion of the event.

Carina & the Six String Preacher will play from 1:30 to 3 p.m., while Ron Hawkins will perform from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Both acts will appear at the pavilion on the Orchard Park Middle School grounds.

The festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, on the middle school campus, 60 S. Lincoln Ave.

“Normally, they just had the local line dancers and martial arts going on both days,” said Don Lorentz, executive director of the chamber. “We wanted to make something a little bit more exciting for the Saturday part.”

Both acts will be performing while also talking about the process of writing music. Lorentz said more music will be added to Saturday’s showcase at a later date.

“We’re looking at trying to step up the Saturday thing to bring more people in,” Lorentz said.

The center of the event is still the arts festival featuring artists, crafters and exhibitors. Currently, 116 artists have signed up for the festival, with the chamber wanting to reach 150 participants by the first week of the August signup deadline.

The 2017 festival, which proved to be the last one under the Quaker Arts Festival banner, drew nearly 250 artists.

Lorentz said he attended the Allentown Art Festival, the City of Buffalo’s largest and most recognized arts festival, and handed out cards promoting the Orchard Park Festival of the Arts.

“A number of them said they’re going to come on board,” he said. “They stopped coming because it got to be too big.”

The chamber has also added Bryant & Stratton College as the title sponsor of the festival. Lorentz said the college will have a table set up during the festival for those looking for information on the college.

There will also be a painting demonstration on both days by Jim Wilson and the Orchard Park Visual Arts Boosters. Lorentz said there is a plan to add more demonstrations to the festival.
