OPHS receives two Kenny Awards for ‘Into the Woods’

After being named one of 10 finalists for the Outstanding Musical Production Kenny Award for the March productions of “Into the Woods,” those involved in the Orchard Park High School production received two more distinctions during the 24th annual Kenny Awards.

The show received Kenny Awards for Outstanding Orchestral Performance and Outstanding Scenic Design during the ceremony held Saturday at Shea’s Buffalo Theatre.

“We were thrilled,” said director Maria Szczepanik. “Those were two of the things that we focused on.”

“Into the Woods” follows classic fairy tale characters such as Cinderella, Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and two original characters as they travel through the woods on a journey to reverse a curse put in place by a witch.

During the awards ceremony at Shea’s, the school presented a six-minute medley of some of the group numbers and solos from the show, Szczepanik said. This is for consideration for the Outstanding Musical Production Kenny Award.

The school previously won Outstanding Orchestral Performance in 2014 and won Outstanding Scenic Design for the first time in school history.

The show was nominated for five awards.
