That dream is now a reality as he is the author of a new book: “Collection of Poetry.”

Mashburn is originally from northwest Georgia and has been living in Western New York for the past 14 years with his wife and two children.

“I’ve enjoyed writing ever since seventh or eighth grade, but I never pursued it until now,” Mashburn said. “This book features poems about personal experiences from my childhood as well as my time serving in the Air Force.”

Mashburn served in Jordan for more than eight years and returned home in 2004. “Collection of Poetry” conveys Mashburn’s struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression in his childhood and how to deal with the difficult times in life. It emphasizes that even though life has its challenges, having a positive attitude can make a world of difference.

“Many of the poems in this book tend to be dark, but I think there is a really important message to take from reading this. There’s hope, and for the people who deal with depression and anxiety on a daily basis, it is important to understand that. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Mashburn said that even though he doesn’t write daily, he puts a lot of time and energy into writing. When asked about writing another book, he said that he is considering doing so and it all depends on his schedule and how many poems he is able to write.

“I get a lot of inspiration from my family,” Mashburn said. “It is the most important part of my life, and I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for them.”

“Collection of Poetry” was published by the Dorrance Publishing Co. Inc., of Pittsburgh. The 66-page paperback is available for $11 by visiting www.bookstore.dorrancepublishing.com or www.dorrancepressroom.com.
