Girls swim team features new leaders

The Orchard Park girls swim team is coming off one of the best seasons in program history. The Lady Quaker went undefeated in league meets, won the ECIC Championship and qualified a host of girls for the state championship meet. This year’s team will feature a different group of headliners than a year ago.

The team will be led by captains Halle Dueringer, Marissa Carrig, Evelyn Quinlan (second year) and Allie McCune. Dueringer, Carrig, Sarah Conley and Allie Mc- Cune were all part of relay teams that qualified for the state championship meet last season. Isabel Sapio and Emma Riccio were also state qualifiers. Additionally, the team features a talented group of eighth-graders that should provide a boost to an already strong program.

Despite the fact that the team is now without star swimmers Olivia Sapio and Katrina Wardner, the Lady Quakers could be even faster this season.

“Despite losing a few key and fantastic Division I swimmers, we are faster overall as a team this year,” Orchard Park coach Bret Norvilitis said. “We have depth at every stroke.”

Orchard Park competes in the always talented ECIC I Division. The Lady Quakers will have to take on tough foes in Clarence, Frontier and Lancaster.

“Clarence is tough as always,” Norvilitis said. “Additionally, Lancaster and Frontier were up-and-coming programs last year and will be tough competition. I believe that the momentum from last season, our outstanding group of talented swimmers, and how much fun we are already having in the pool will help us towards another great season.”

The team doesn’t have any specific goal of repeating as ECIC I champions or any of 2016’s other accomplishments. Norvilitis is focused on helping each girl reach her potential, knowing that will carry the program to a good season.

“Our goal is to have every girl swim to her potential,” Norvilitis said. “If we can do that, we will have a terrific year I predict that Section VI will be well represented at Ithaca in November. ECIC I has a lot of talent this year. It will be exciting to watch.”
