Out of the Past


BELL STILL STANDING — On the morning after a Christmas week fire in 1918 at the firehouse on West Quaker Road, there was nothing left but the fire bell. It had fallen to the concrete floor of the building and had suffered a large chip in the process. The bell was subsequently enshrined in a memorial in front of the current Orchard Park firehouse.

Close to 100 Michael and Baker Road residents packed the Municipal Building Monday to voice their opposition to a cluster development in their neighborhood.

A scholarship reserve fund has been established in memory of Charlotte C. Stilwell, former Orchard Park Board of Education president, trustee and Cornell University graduate. The fund is for Orchard Park students attending Cornell University in undergraduate and graduate programs who need temporary or emergency financial help while at the school.

David LaLomia, a 1993 Orchard Park High School graduate, has recently completed a successful career with The College of Wooster’s lacrosse team. A senior defenseman, LaLomia started all 15 games this season.

The Lady Quaker laxers finished their season with three big wins, including Orchard Park’s first-ever victory over powerhouse Nichols on Monday, May 12.
