School District accepting petitions for board
The Orchard Park Central School District is now accepting petitions for School Board candidacy. Petitions are available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in the clerk’s office, 3030 Baker Road. The three-year terms of current board members Carla Marrazzo and Al McClymonds will expire on June 30. The deadline to file petitions is Monday, April 16. A public vote on the candidates and the annual budget will be held on May 15.
Planning for retirement event offered in OP
A retirement wellness checkup event will be offered from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at Orchard Glen, 6055 Armor Road. Registration is at 6:45 p.m. This event is for those considering their options for retirement planning. Topics such as paying for care and estate planning will be covered. School district sets dates for 2012-13 budget talks
The Orchard Park Central School District has budget presentations planned for the following dates: 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Ellicott, 5180 Ellicott Road; 7 p.m. Monday, April 30, at the high school, 4040 Baker Road; 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Eggert, 3580 Eggert Road; 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Windom, 3870 Sheldon Road; 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the middle school, 60 S. Lincoln Drive; and 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at South Davis, 51 S. Davis St.
Youth Job Fair targets part-time, seasonal work
A Youth Job Fair will be hosted from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at Erie Community College’s One Stop Training and Employment Center, 3176 Abbott Road. To qualify, youths must be at least a graduating high school senior or older and must come with a typed resume and be dressed for an interview. Hiring employers will be on site to meet with youths for part-time and seasonal jobs. There will be raffles and prizes. For more information, call 825-2525, ext. 3026.
Orchard Glen to host open house, workshops
Orchard Glen, a retirement community, will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at 6055 Armor Duells Road. Attendees will be able to see current residents and their apartments and cottages. There will be food, drinks and prizes. Additionally, a veterans benefits aid workshop will be held at the same location from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, and from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 24. Space is limited. Silver Foxes Luncheon to feature magician
The Orchard Park Presbyterian Church’s Silver Foxes Luncheon will feature magician Glenn Begert at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 19, at the church, 4369 S. Buffalo St. A catered luncheon of vegetable lasagna, salad, bread sticks and lemon squares will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. It will be $8 per person. Cash or checks may be made payable to the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church and will be accepted at the door on the day of the program. Harlem Ambassadors to visit high school
The Orchard Park Chamber of Commerce will present the Harlem Ambassadors Basketball Show at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the high school, 4040 Baker Road. The Harlem Ambassadors will face off with a team of representatives from the business community, school district and community at large. ECC to host networking event on April 25
Erie Community College’s Telecommunications Technology Department will hold an information session for the Cisco Networking Academy from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in Room 5112 in Building 5, at the college’s South Campus, 4041 Southwestern Blvd. The event will include program demonstrations, faculty who will be available for questions and refreshments. Benefit for Nathan Carducci scholarship set
A benefit will be held for the Nathan P. Carducci Scholarship Fund at Canisius High School from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Orchard Park American Legion Post, 3740 N. Buffalo St. There will be beer, wine, pop, food, a Chinese auction, silent auction, 50/50 split raffle and live music. A donation of $25 is suggested. Spaghetti dinner to raise funds for animals
The Heart Animal Rescue & Adoption Team will hold a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, to raise money for the organization. The dinner will be held at the American Legion Post 567, 3740 N. Buffalo Road. There will be homemade desserts, a Chinese auction and a 50/50 split raffle. Village sets free event for electronics recycling
The village will hold a free computer and electronics recycling event for village and town residents from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the following dates: April 21, May 19, Aug. 18 and Sept. 15 at the village Department of Public Works, 100 W. Highland Ave. Computer monitors, mice and keyboards, among other items, may be brought. Attendees must bring proof of residency in either the town or village.
Southtowns Youth Orchestra to perform

Church to hold rummage sale
Orchard Park Presbyterian Church will hold a rummage sale from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the church, 4369 S. Buffalo St. A bag sale is scheduled from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, April 28. Admission costs $1, and the cost for a bag also is $1. The sale will feature housewares, linens, small appliances, clothing, jewelry, books and toys. The funds raised are used to support projects such as purchasing several water filtering systems for Haiti and sponsoring two students in Kenya.
School plans annual Monte Carlo night
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart's annual Monte Carlo Night will be held from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the school, 3144 Abbott Road. Presale tickets are $12 and at the door, $15. The price includes admission, door prizes, food, beer, wine, pop, gaming tables, theme baskets, special raffles, duck pond and several 50/50 split raffles. Chicken barbecue planned by seniors
The Senior Council of Orchard Park Inc. is sponsoring a chicken barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at BW’s, 5007 Lake Ave., Blasdell. The cost is $8 per dinner. Tickets are available through April 26 at the Senior Center, Armor Senior Group, Hillcrest Seniors Group, Orchard Park Senior Citizens Group, St. John Vianney Senior Group, St. John’s Lutheran Church and Diamonds in the Rough. American Legion to hold Testimonial dinner dance
The Orchard Park American Legion Post 567 will host a Testimonial Dinner Dance on Saturday, April 14, at the post, 3740 N. Buffalo St. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. The event will be a formal Legion ceremony awarding the Legionnaire, Auxiliary Lady, Son of the Legion, Legion Rider and Veteran of Foreign Wars of the year. College offers seminar on human trafficking
The Franciscan Federation and Hilbert College is sponsoring a conference on human trafficking from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 26, and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, April 27, at Hilbert College, 5200 South Park Ave. Learn more about the realities of human trafficking and the efforts to combat this modern-day slavery. Women’s Club offering Scholarship Program
The Women’s Club of Orchard Park is accepting applications for its scholarship, which provides financial help to women 25 years or older who are furthering their education. Applicants should show financial need, be enrolled in an accredited college, university or vocational training program, and be a resident of the school district. To request an application, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Judith Horan at 70-5 Carriage Drive, Orchard Park, NY 14127. The application deadline is April 20.
School budget vote planned for May 15
Residents of the Orchard Park Central School District will vote on the 2012-13 budget from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the high school, 4040 Baker Road, in the gymnasium. Residents will vote on the $83.6 million spending plan, in addition to the annual bus purchase, which will be $680,000 to purchase eight school buses. The public will also vote for two School Board members.
OP Fire Company to hold open house April 22
The Orchard Park Fire Company will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at 30 School St. The open house is for anyone who wants to know who their local firefighters are and what they do. Also if anyone is interested in becoming a firefighter, this is a way to learn more about the job. People can learn about the trucks, equipment and the training it takes to become firefighters.
Garden Club to hold monthly meeting
The Orchard Park Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at noon Thursday, May 3, at the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, 4369 S. Buffalo St. Following a business meeting, plans for the spring plant sale on May 12 will be discussed.
St. John’s Lutheran Church to host auction
The senior high youth at St. John’s Lutheran Church will host a theme basket auction on Saturday, May 5, at the church, 4536 S. Buffalo St. The money raised will be used to support youth from Hamburg, Orchard Park, West Seneca, Blasdell, East Aurora and Lancaster as they participate in a week of service in Bay City, Mich., called “Week of Hope.”
OP Home Bureau to host theme basket raffle
The Orchard Park Home Bureau will hold a theme basket raffle at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in the cafeteria at St. John Vianney School, 2950 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park. Admission is $1, and sheets of 25 tickets cost $5 each. Coffee and desserts will be served during the event, which will also feature merchant raffles, a split club and door prizes.
