Michael Dieter was in boot camp the day the country fell under attack by foreign terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001.

He recalls working in the kitchen that day at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, when the news broke.

Free car seat inspections offered

Rainwater cistern to come to village

The village will become a bit more green this summer when it begins catching rainwater and using it for activities such as watering flowers and washing cars.

The rainwater cistern is the result of a grant through the state Department of Environmental Conservation and The Western New York Stormwater Coalition, said Mayor John Wilson at Monday’s Village Board meeting.

William Street center to stay at least three more years

According to Sen. Charles Schumer, the William Street Processing Center will remain open for at least three years.

According to Schumer’s website, the center would have been eligible for closure when the current post office and facility moratorium expired on May 15.

Father Baker Manor recognized for resident satisfaction

Three Catholic Health long-term-care facilities – Father Baker Manor in Orchard Park, Mercy Nursing Facility and St. Vincent’s of Dunkirk have been named among the top 10 percent in the country for resident satisfaction, according to a report published by My InnerView, a division of the National Research Corporation.

Sgt. Eric Scheffer of Orchard Park recently completed the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program with his unit’s freedom salute ceremony, honoring the service of soldiers. As part of the ceremony, Scheffer received the Army Commendation Medal for his service in Iraq.
